The Kennebunks Road Rally

John Gable's Bio

John Gable, an original and incisive artist, combines a realist's style with his own independent spirit. His distinct sense of composition infuses his work with a quality of light and atmosphere that creates a mood beyond realism. The viewer shares Mr. intimacy with the subjects he paints. His work exhibits a rare combination of technical facility and emotional involvement. His range is extremely broad, including works representing subject matter near the artists environment in Maine to studies of the Boston Classical Orchestra in concert and the annual "Head of the Charles" race. Mr. Gable has
been involved in painting corporate murals. Recently, he completed a 65-foot mural for the Automotive Hall of Fame at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.

His rising international reputation was heightened by two major commissions which captured the spirit of the world-class America's Cup. The artist has many one-man shows in leading art galleries in New York City and around New England. His work may be found in private and corporate collections around the country. He was awarded the coveted William A. Paton Prize at the 161st Annual Exhibition of the National Academy of Design. John Gable, watercolorist, Who's Who of American Art, seascapes, marine artist, automobile artist, America's Cup commemorative artist.

Through his superlative art, John Gable has created an unequaled visual chronicle celebrating the color and drama of the world of sport. No other living American painter has devoted so much energy to the meticulous recording of the subjects he has chosen to paint. When Stars & Stripes brought the America?s Cup home once again to the United States, his was the commemorative painting of the victory. Prior to this historic event, Mr. Gable captured the Australian win of the coveted cup with a commemorative series for Alan Bond. He has produced, in his spectacular paintings, a dramatic and true representation of all 24 of the sailing vessels which took part in the America's Cup races. As the United States had such a marvelous winning record in this billionaire sport, artistic recordings of it will always be of great value.

In concert with Harvard University the artist created a unique suite of four rowing prints titled "The Oarsman". This series of signed prints became an important vehicle to help raise funds for the vaunted Harvard University, Newell Boat House on Boston?s historic Charles River. Other commemorative paintings have included those for Northeastern University, Oxford University and Power Ten NYC, as well as a broad range of diverse sporting subjects. John Gable?s original and realistic style clearly demonstrates his command of light and his sense of sporting drama.

Through his unparallel talent and technique, he has helped nurture a strong collecting interest for his sporting paintings. Athletes, sports figures and serious art collectors have eagerly awaited each new Gable image. Mr. Gable paints from his studio in a two-hundred year-old coastal Maine farm house overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. John Gable, a painter and muralist, also worked for Young America during the 1995 campaign.

Gable does portraits as well as the yachting paintings he's so famous for. His portrait of U.S. Senator William Hathaway hangs in the Capital Rotunda. He's also done Gordon Ulmer, president of the Bank of New England, Boston.
