| A Welcome from the Director |
The Kennebunks are steeped in history; knowing that history can help us maintain their unique character.
Given the fast pace of life today, most of us do not take the time to fully appreciate were we live, and the stories of those who came before us and built our beautiful towns and villages. I often drive by the local houses, places that are not tourist destinations, just beautiful old colonials, capes and farmhouses, and wonder about the stories behind every building.
By understanding the traditional industry, business, construction and personal stories of those who helped shaped the area, current residents can help guide the future, from politics to land use, and maintain ties to our unique heritage. I think it is fun just being able to tell an interesting story to our out-of-state guests and family.
I've also found that typically, people who are interested in historic autos are also interested in local history. Most collectible cars can be admired as examples of art, much like an 1800's Cape style house. They just don't build 'em like they used to. The blending of a road rally with a lesson in local history is a natural combination.
